Focusing on the idea of "integrating resources and enhancing capabilities", the College of Materials Science and Engineering actively explores the technological innovation system of the combination of industry, University and research, and highlights the leading role of science and technology in economic and social development, aiming at "enhancing the ability of independent innovation and enhancing core competitiveness".

Over the past three years, the College has been awarded one project,6 topics,and 13 Subtopics of the 13th Five-Year Plan key R&D program, and 2 excellent youth projects; 1 national second-class prize for scientific and technological progress and 2 provincial and ministerial second-class prizes for scientific and technological progress; an average annual total funding of 40 million yuan, 34 million yuan for research funds; 320 papers including SCI and EI were published annually, of which 230 were SCI papers.In the field of materials, 40 papers in the first group of academic ranking by Chinese Academy of Sciences and 3 international cooperation regional papers are published annually. 20 projects of National Natural Science Foundation and 20 projects of Shanghai Science and Technology were newly established in 2018. The research field of introducing talents has become a new growth point of scientific research and discipline construction in college.
