Shanghai Key Laboratory for Development and Application of Metal Functional Materials was established in 1995. In 2002, in response to the call of the Municipal Government to develop the city through science and education, with the strong support of the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission, Tongji University and the former Shanghai Iron and Steel Research Institute (now transferred to Baosteel Group), the key laboratorywere co-constructed. The key laboratoryafter co-construction are divided into two parts, and the research branch is located in theSchoolof Materials Science and Engineering of Tongji University, whilethe former Shanghai Iron and Steel Research Institute (nowit is included in theCentral Research Institute of Baowu Group) as a pilot and pilot production base.The key Labsuccessfully passed the evaluation organized by Shanghai Science and Technology Commission in 2003, 2008, 2012, 2015 and 2018. Under the leadership of Shanghai Science and Technology Commission and with the support of Tongji University and Baowu Group, the key laboratory is based on the frontier of metal functional materials science and industry, focusing on the national and local needs and the core task of establishing Shanghai Science and Technology Creation Center, with thefocuses on"lightweight materials, magnetic materials, energy materials and new metal functional materials", which arethe four main research directions.Based on the four research fields, the labwillkeep on the investigations ofthedevelopment and applicationof metal functional materials, build a demonstration base for key scientificand technologicalresearch, achievement transformation and technological innovation, continuously improve the ability of independent innovation and sustainable development, and build the laboratory into a service, leading and technological innovation base.ThroughsupportingBaowu Group, Shanghai and even the national sustainable development of new metal materials development and Application Research strength,the lab willsignificantly enhance the ability to serve Baowu Group and Shanghai's economic and social development.

There are more than 30staffsin the key laboratory, including 2 outstanding young people, 1ChangJiang scholar, 2 people in the "ten thousand plan" and 4 people in the "four green" talents. In recent years,thelab hasundertaken a large number ofscientific research projects, and formed researchfieldsin light weight materials, magnetic materials, thermoelectric materials, etc. They have also done a lot of work in applied basic research, engineering technology services and professional training. Over thepast three years, key laboratories have undertaken more than 30 million yuan of project funds, including more than 30 national projects; published more than 100 SCI-indexedpapers inAdvancedMaterials,NatureCommunication and other high-leveljournals; authorized more than 40 patents; won two provincial and ministerial awards; and trained more than 50 graduate students. In addition,thekey lab hasestablished close cooperative relationships with Shanghai Automobile, Shanghai Electric, local governments and private enterprises in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai, actively developedand promotednew achievements in scientific research, and have made remarkable achievements in school-enterprise cooperation and integration of production, teaching and research.
