Administered by Ministry of Education, the Key Laboratory of Advanced Civil Engineering Materials (Tongji University),Ministry of Education was founded in 2005. The Laboratory was based on 5secondary doctoral programs (Science of Material,Physical Chemistry of Material,Material Processing,Construction Engineering and Engineering Mechanics),3 State Key disciplines (Materials Science and Engineering, Construction Engineering and Engineering Mechanics) and two postdoctoral research stations (Materials Science and Engineering ,Civil Engineering).

The laboratory is oriented by serving the national strategy and the needs of the development of civil engineering materials industry, and aims to solve the theories and key generic technology for the preparation and service of high-performance materials required in the field of civil engineering. The laboratory introduces and fosters a group of high-level innovative talents and teams with great impact in the field. Talents and teams in the laboratory has carried out forward-looking, original and subversive theory and applied research to provide intellectual and technical support for speeding up the strategic transformation and upgrading of traditional civil engineering materials industry and ensuring the construction of national major infrastructure and the implementation of major strategies. According to the overall orientation and objectives, the laboratory focus on the following five research directions: (1)Mechanical behavior of concrete materials; (2)Building energy efficiency and functional materials; (3)High performance cement based materials; (4)Polymer composite materials for civil engineering; (5)Ecological cement matrix materials.

The Laboratory at present possesses more than 50 scientific and technological staff and more than 340 postdoctoral researchers and graduates.Since it was established ten years ago, it has mainly undertaken the research projects funded by National 973 Projects,National 863 Projects,National Key Science＆Technology Research Projects,National Science and Technology Support Plan,Key Programs of National Natural Science and other important projects supported by the state and local government. The scientific research fund exceeds 100 million yuan. The laboratory has accomplished many technical achievements including nearly 300 granted invertion patents and over 10 natural science and technology progress awards at national and provincial levels.
